Today In Latin American History
The surviving passengers of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 457, which had crashed over the Andes on October 13, 1972 while carrying an Uruguayan rugby team to a match in Santiago de Chile, were finally rescued on December 23rd of that year after spending more than two months stranded in the mountains. The survivors had little food and no source of heat in the harsh conditions at over 11,800 ft. altitude. Faced with starvation and radio news reports that the search for them had been abandoned, the survivors are said to have fed on the dead passengers who had been preserved in the snow. Rescuers did not learn of the survivors until 72 days after the crash when passengers Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, after a 10-day trek across the Andes, found a Chilean huaso named Sergio Catalan who gave them food and then alerted authorities about the existence of the other survivors. The story of the crash was told into a book entitled Alive, which was eventually made into an American motion picture starring Ethan Hawke and released in 1993.
